Balanced Calendars

What You Need to Know

On Nov. 23, the IPS Board of School Commissioners voted 6-1 to approve a new “balanced” or year-round calendar for the 2011-12 school year.

The new calendar features nine-week instructional blocks followed by two-week intersessions. Students who are identified by their teachers as failing or needing additional academic support will be required to attend remediation during the intersessions. Families of students who are not required to attend remediation may use the intersessions as non-school days to participate in family vacations. Enrichment activities also will be available during intersessions at select IPS schools should families choose to provide these opportunities to their children.

The new calendar begins August 8, 2011.The first intersession is Oct. 10 - 21; the second intersession is March 26 – April 6. The last day of school is June 12, 2012.

“This new calendar will provide children who need additional help 20 extra days of learning,” said Superintendent Eugene G. White. “Children will be able attend remediation during the morning and spend the afternoon participating in a variety of activities offered by community partners such as the YMCA or the Boys and Girls Clubs.”
